In the Camps: A Refugee Musical is a play written and produced by Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay. Using songs and humor, In the Camps tells the story of four friends who’ve escaped communist Laos; landed in the same refugee camp; and are hoping to begin a new life in the United States.

In the Camps wrapped up its second phase in September 2023, which involved a workshop production with four intimate performances at Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center. Additional events included an opening night reception, a Southeast Asian pop-up market, and a closing reception. Each show was sold out.

As a designer, I created print and digital promotional materials such as programs, posters, and social media content. As the marketing lead, my tasks included building out the social media calendar, posting content, managing  the Eventbrite page, and photographing rehearsals and events.

INSPIRATION

The visual identity of In the Camps was inspired by Southeast Asian pop culture and aesthetics of the ‘80s, as well as archival images and documents from the refugee camps.
